Does Hemp CBD Get You High?

Posted by Phene Wardlaw on

Cannabis and hemp products are everywhere these days; from THC to CBD, there’s an acronym out there for everyone! Hemp CBD is one of these products, and the question on most of our lips is … can it get you high?

CBD doesn’t get you high

CBD cannot get you high, which may be good or bad news, depending on what you’re after.

Whether it is derived from hemp or cannabis, CBD cannot cause a high. Another cannabinoid called THC is instead responsible for the more infamous effects of cannabis.

The main difference between CBD and THC, and where scientists think the psychotropic differences lie, is that THC strongly binds to the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, while CBD instead acts through non-cannabinoid receptors and other receptor pathways.

CBD may affect your high, but not in the way you think

CBD can’t get you high, and in fact, it may even reduce the effects of a high from THC.

A 2013 study found that CBD reduced the paranoia effects of THC and improved patients’ memory scores (1). CBD has shown some ability to protect you from some of the psychoactive effects of THC.

Is there a difference between hemp CBD and cannabis CBD?

Technically, the only difference between hemp CBD and cannabis CBD is where the compound originates. But, because hemp CBD contains very little THC compared to cannabis, hemp-derived CBD is more likely to be free from THC.

Is hemp CBD legal?

Because it can’t get you high, hemp CBD is more readily available in the US than THC. Provided that it contains no more than 0.3% THC, CBD is legal under federal law (2).

If you’re looking to get high, then hemp CBD is definitely not the product for you. But with its varied health benefits and legal status, don’t count out hemp CBD just because it won’t leave you giggling!
